REVIEW: DAMN, “Our Circus, Our Monkeys,” (10/30/2026)

I probably shouldn’t review my own show, but here goes.

I am not going to discuss all of the pieces, and that includes my own, which was not, in my opinion, one of the more memorable.

There was some interesting dramatic writing. Yussef El Guindi’s “Thespian Killers Anonymous” does a clever meta-art trick, bad acting descrying bad acting, whereas “Industry: A Business Epic” by Judah Tirado hopefully presages the rout of the Trump era in its cartoon presentation of the mind games of success.

The evening’s prize in dramaturgy, however, goes to Chris Mathews, as usual, for his play “Pissy Pleasantries.”

Chris relishes middle-brow erotica with a twist. Just when you think he is going to wave around a giant inflatable “D,” he surprises you by turning smart and having it be a good play, in the end.

But the night belonged to Joey Tirado. He was the lead actor in two of the actual plays, as well as doing much of the design and set work. He’s very solid in this type of theatre and really brings it home.

I have never been so glad to see Goddess Kring. She fills up the room. The acts were out of order opening night due to her being in another show across town and having to come in late. The show was a little bedraggled without her. The Grand Dame soothed us. We were okay when she was there. (She performed with Fantasy A.)
